Choosing the right football size for toddlers makes a surprising difference when it comes to how much fun they will have whilst playing in the garden or at football classes. When a ball is the right size, your toddler will be able to kick it, stop it and follow it much more easily.

Within this article, we will look at each size in turn, what to choose at each age, and the signs that your child is ready to move up to the next football size.

How does football sizing work?

Footballs are sized from 1 (the smallest) up to 5 (the adult match ball), and each step up adds both circumference and weight.

For younger children, the aim is a ball that sits comfortably in front of their feet rather than towering over them. A ball that is too large tends to stop dead when kicked, bounce off shins or roll straight over tiny toes. A ball that suits their size moves when they kick it, which is exactly the reward a toddler is looking for.

Which size football suits a 2, 3 or 4 year old?

The table below gives a quick guide you can use when shopping:

Age:

Recommended Ball Size:

Why it works:

2 Years Olds

Size 1

Light and easy to move with gentle kicks. Ideal for first touches and rolling games.

3 Years Olds

Size 1

Light and easy to move with gentle kicks. Ideal for first touches and rolling games.

4 Years Old

Size 1-2

Size 2 is still small enough to control with a little extra weight. Gets them ready to move onto Size 3 when they reach 5+.

This table is only a starting point and all children are different. A tall, steady 3 year old may be ready for a bigger ball sooner than a smaller or more cautious 4 year old, and that is completely normal.

Why does a smaller football matter for young children?

A smaller football for toddlers matters because it matches their body size, strength and coordination. It will help them to succeed during classes and to have more fun.

The right size also supports the skills that come later. When a child can reach the ball easily, they start to learn how to use different parts of the foot, how to stop a moving ball and how to keep it close as they walk or jog. These are the early foundations of dribbling and passing.

Using a smaller ball will also help with their confidence. Young children are quick to decide whether they are enjoying something and want to keep doing it. A ball that rolls away nicely after a kick feels like a win, while a ball that barely moves can prove to be frustrating or upsetting. Getting the football size for toddlers right is one of the simplest ways to help them feel confident and to keep them having fun.

When should a toddler move up to a bigger football?

A toddler is usually ready for a bigger football when they can kick their current ball with confidence, keep it close while moving and stop it without falling over. There is no fixed date or age for this, so it is best to watch them when they are playing or in classes.

It is recommended that you stick to Size 1 or 2 when they are 4 or under. By the time children reach 5 and beyond, a size 3 is generally the standard choice for kids football in the UK.

Your Socatots coach will be able to see how your child is doing and recommend whether it is time they move up.

How can parents help toddlers enjoy playing with a football?

Parents can help most by keeping any at-home football practice playful, short and by joining in with your kid. At this age, games like rolling the ball back and forth, gently kicking it into a makeshift goal (think a couple of jumpers for goal posts) or chasing it around the garden do more for development than any formal drill.

Structured football classes will also help. At Socatots, our sessions are designed for children from 6 months to 5 years, and parents take part in every class, so you will be a part of your toddlers learning, every step of the way.

What Size Football Should a 2, 3 or 4 Year Old Use?

We recommend that for children aged 2-3, you use a Size 1 ball. When they reach 4, you could begin to introduce a Size 2 ball. But, every child is different so the most important thing is that you get a ball that your child can comfortably kick, chase, move around and have fun with.

If your child attends our Socatots classes, their coach will be happy to talk with you more about the right football size for your toddler.
