Football Classes For 5 Year Olds

Our Socatots football classes for 5 year olds are 45 minutes long and sit within Phase 3 of our football programme. This is the final stage of our programme for children aged 6 months to 5 years. With over 90 locations across the UK, Ireland, and the Channel Islands, sessions are led by DBS-qualified, UKCFDS-qualified, First Aid trained coaches. At 5, children work in pairs and small groups, tackle more advanced commands, and put years of accumulated skill into purposeful practice, making this the most dynamic and technically focused phase of the Socatots journey.

What Makes 5 Years Old a Landmark Stage

The age of 5 years old is when all the skills your child has learned with us come together. Children who have progressed through the Socatots programme arrive at this phase with physical literacy, social confidence, and cognitive habits that set them well apart from peers who are only just beginning structured activity. But even for children joining at 5, this phase delivers rapid, visible progress.

Sessions develop skills across three areas which are now applied at a higher level of complexity than any previous phase:

Development Area Key Skills Enhanced
Physical/Motor Skills Advanced coordination, speed, footwork, ball control in the air
Cognitive Skills Pattern recognition, listening to complex commands, numeracy
Social-Emotional Skills Cooperation, teamwork, communication, self-belief

What is new at this stage is that the children will begin working in pairs and small groups rather than primarily with a parent, and activities introduce juggling technique and aerial ball control alongside continued footwork development. The step up in challenge is deliberate as 5 year olds are ready for it, and rising to it builds exactly the kind of confidence that translates into school, sport, and social life.

The Benefits of Football for 5 Year Olds

The main benefit of football for a 5 year old is that the game becomes genuinely social and decision-rich, and in playing it your child develops sportsmanship, empathy and the ability to think for themselves. At five, children are old enough to grasp that an activity can be won or lost, and football gives them a gentle, low-stakes place to practise handling both. Celebrating a good moment without gloating, and taking a setback in their stride rather than in tears, is a real piece of emotional growth, and learning it through enjoyable play makes it feel natural rather than like a lesson.

Five is also the age children start to notice and care about how others are doing. Working in pairs and small groups gives your child the chance to cheer a teammate on, to include someone who is finding an activity tricky, and to feel the shared pleasure of doing something well together. This kind of everyday empathy is one of the most valuable things a five year old can be developing, and a team setting draws it out in a way solo play never could.

Just as importantly, this is the age football starts to ask your child to think on their feet. With a fuller set of skills and less direct instruction than in earlier phases, a five year old begins making their own choices in the moment – who to pass to, when to move and how to solve the small problem in front of them. That shift from following a single command to making a decision is a genuine cognitive step up, and it builds the independent, adaptable thinking that will serve your child well long after the final whistle.

How Classes Are Structured for 5 Year Olds

In the Phase 3 sessions, your child will be doing passing, receiving, dribbling, juggling and balances. The focus will be on three parts of their feet each week, for example insides, soles and laces and all of the activities will revolve around using those three parts.

Phase 3 is characterised by greater peer interaction and the children will be placed in pairs and small groups to work through activities together, developing the cooperation and communication skills that are immediately relevant to starting school.

“While the physical health benefits of staying active are well known, team sports also support cognitive and social-emotional development. They help children build friendships, develop problem-solving skills and learn the importance of teamwork and respect. These experiences can lay the foundation for success both on and off a field.”

This shift toward peer-based learning doesn’t mean parents step back entirely. Parents remain actively involved in each session, supporting your child, reinforcing their confidence, and remaining an anchor as children navigate the new social dynamic of working with others. At 5, this balance between peer interaction and parental support mirrors what children are experiencing in the classroom. Practising this in a low-pressure, high-enjoyment environment makes a genuine difference.

Ready for School, Ready for Teams, Ready for What Comes Next

At 5, children are stepping into school, joining football teams, and beginning to measure themselves against peers for the first time. Parents consistently tell us that children who have come through the Socatots programme handle this transition with a composure and capability that stands out in their PE lessons, on the pitch, and in the classroom.

They come away with physical skills, higher levels of confidence and the ability to listen, cooperate, persist, and back themselves. Whether your child goes on to emulate Trent Alexander-Arnold or Chloe Kelly, or simply wants to enjoy sport and feel good doing it, Phase 3 sends them into the next chapter equipped for it all.
